Deuteron-Gold (dAu) Run Planning [history]
Thu Mar 27 23:00: The RHIC FY2003 deuteron-gold run officially ended at 09:00 Mon Mar 24, and RHIC is presently in startup mode for the FY2003 polarized proton run as of late Tue Mar 25. A deuteron-gold luminosity delivery plot is available here [postscript]. Final typical peak luminosities for PHENIX and STAR were 4.6-5.1x1028 cm-2s-1, 110-130% of the dAu program goal, and typical average luminosities were 1.5-2.5x1028 cm-2s-1, 100-150% of the dAu program goal, using 56 bunches/ring (since Wed Feb 26), deuteron bunch merging (since Fri Feb 28), and rebucketing in both rings (since Fri Mar 7). (A detailed run chronology is also available.) The total run of 70 days had 113 reasonable production stores delivering peak ZDC rates up to 25kHz. Those stores delivered total integrated luminosities (in nb-1) of 24.35 (PHENIX), 19.85 (STAR), 15.83 (BRAHMS) and 13.43 (PHOBOS). In final weeks the RHIC integrated luminosity/week at PHENIX (with beta*=2m) was 4.58 nb-1/week, 115% of dAu program goal. Final typical injector intensities were 7-8x108 Au/bunch and 9-11x1010 d/bunch at RHIC injection.
The FY03 deuteron-gold run is scheduled for 16 weeks of beam time, starting around Dec 1 2002. All experiments have agreed with the C-AD preference of deuterons in Blue, gold in Yellow to start this run, motivated by the desire to inject deuterons as early as possible. There is no plan to investigate the running condition of deuterons in Yellow and gold in Blue.

Injection optics in both rings is beta*=10 m at all IPs, and optics at transition energy during ramping are beta*=5 m. Collision optics in both rings are beta*=2 m at all four experimental locations and beta*=10m (blue), 8m (yellow) at non-experiment locations, with 56 bunches in each ring. As of Fri Jan 10 we have moved to routine 110 bunch dAu ramps. As of Wed Feb 26 we have moved back to 56 bunch dAu ramps to avoid vacuum and radiation problems in the PHOBOS common warm straight. As of Sunday Feb 9 we have raised the PHOBOS beta* to 4m. As of Thursday Mar 6 we have lowered the PHOBOS beta* to 3m and raised the BRAHMS beta* to 3m.

An asymmetric ramp solution that requires reversal of a small number of DX/D0 shunt power supplies has been found, with a storage DX current of 5578A that does not require DX retraining. Both species will be injected at equal rigidity and collide at equal frequency. Orbits will be vertically separated at injection and while ramping to avoid modulated beam-beam tuneshifts. There are no known ZDC luminosity monitoring issues with dAu operations, as forward neutron coincidences will only be present with Au nuclear dissociation from inelastic dAu collisions.

General Run Organization
Tue Dec 03: The RHIC blue ring is currently at operating temperature, and the yellow ring is planned to be cold and operational approx Mon Dec 9. The current draft FY03-04 Operations Schedule [19 Jun 02] implies start of deuteron-gold beam operations around Dec 1 2002, with two weeks of setup and three weeks of ramp-up. The RHIC BUPs and PAC decided that the 24 beam weeks (29 cryo weeks) of funded RHIC FY03 run will be split into 16 weeks of deuteron-gold followed by 8 weeks of polarized proton operations. Shutdown activities include RHIC spin rotator installation and Booster BAF final construction.

A Controls Dry Run was held September 30-October 4 [See details here], and Restart Dry Runs [See details here] was held October 21-25, with a second scheduled for November 4-8, focusing on new application testing and system checkout, and dAu sequencing and ramp preparation.

According to the current Scheduling Physicist Page, we are scheduled to develop d and Au from Tandem to the ATR dump, from Oct 7 to Oct 21. Injector mode switching between deuterons and gold will be tested throughout this period.
