RHIC Ring

Located on the east/central part of beautiful Long Island, New York, at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is scheduled for commissioning in 1999.

The RHIC Ring pictured above is an underground circular (almost) tunnel 3.8 kilometers in circumference. Once completed, RHIC will accelerate heavy ions in opposite directions through the ring at nearly the speed of light, then collide them, giving researchers the opportunity to study these collisions using the STAR and PHENIX detectors.
